Happy Belated Christmas and New Year to everyone! Man, what happened to that week of lovelyness? Went by wayyyy to fast. Let's see... updates :
Josh and I stayed in Cali this Christmas, first time away from family and it was bitter sweet for sure. We spent the week eating and drinking and just being excellent company to each other. Had a great new years eve at our friend Sucheta's house which included a rousing game of both Uno and Yahtzee :)
Our honeymoon to Maui is officially booked and I CAN'T WAIT! That is all. Back to work.

This past weekend I surprised Josh with a trip up to Napa! We stayed in Yountville. Can we say Thomas Keller paradise? yes, we can :) We rented bikes and went wine tasting/biking through the Stag's Leap District. The best thing was the bikes were electric, so you didn't have to pedal if you got tired!.. or in our case, lazy. :) We also had dinner at one of our fav restaurants Ad Hoc. What a great trip! Thank you napa valley, we will return soon! :)

New Hobby : Needle Felting

About a year ago I discovered this awesome art called Felting or Needle Felting. You have these special needles that are covered in little barbs and then you take loose wool roving and stab it with the needle, the barbs pull the tiny threads together and eventually build your felt into whatever shape you want! Its like sculpting but with fabric! Here is my latest piece I did. It was the cake topper for our wedding <3
I think all you Ghibli fans might recognize the inspiration :)
I also did a much larger piece for last years Lighting Dept art show. I'll be sure to get a picture up of that soon :)

So I'm always up for a stay-cation, snuggled up on my couch with a book... or the tv remote :) But I have to say I might just have to leave my humble abode for this place. No, rephrase, I would leave my humble abode in the dust for this place. The newly remodeled La Banane Hotel in St. Barts looks like something out of my dreams. Nestled in a coconut grove, the nine bungalows are furnished with vintage furniture built by Pierre Jeanneret (cousin of Le Corbusier) back in the fifties. The address is also completely confidential and revealed ONLY to the guests. Reason number 42 why I need to win the lottery.

Memorial Day weekend was one of the best weekends ever. Josh and I flew to PA to see my cousin Jenny get married. She has been by my side almost my entire life and therefore I consider her more of a sister than a cousin. The wedding was at a rustic estate, everything was designed by the bride and groom, and my god, it was all beautiful! I got to spend a lot of time with friends and family and I loved every glorious second of it :)

So, a browsing trip through the Palo Alto Borders actually paid off this time! I was juggling two books ( Kathy Griffen's memoir and Anthony Bourdain 's Kitchen Confidential... I have a thing for people with smart mouths). Kathy won out for reasons I'm not really sure of, but I made a great decision and I'll tell ya why. She's got this incredible way of story telling. Its like shes a friend just gossiping with you over coffee. Her way of standup translates perfectly into this book. I often find myself having to read things more than once to really make sure I understand whats happening, but with this book, it just flows. Granted I'm only about a quarter of the way through, but I honestly get excited to crawl into bed early at night so I can pop it open and read some more. It's been a long time since I've found a book like that :)

howdy howdy! So I forgot to mention this past Sunday I got to hit up Wondercon in the city.
Its basically a comic book convention, but Josh and I love to go and peruse the art book vendors. And by peruse, I mean scour like mad people. It often pays off with marvelous finds at decent prices. The trick is to go on the last day because the vendors will often give you a deal so they don't have to pack up as much stuff :) Spoils of war:

This was a fine fine weekend indeed! Because Josh and I may be starting to work Saturdays in the next week or so, we figured we should go out and take advantage of this weekend. Plus the fact that it was gorgeous outside. We jumped in the car and drove up to the city. In the midst of our excursion we came across Telegraph Hill and rode the elevator to the top of Coit Tower. It was fun but not something that I ever need to do again. The tower shook a lot because of the old elevator and it made me really nervous. I was done in 5 minutes. no joke. So after a quick drink at Visuvio (One of my fav bars) we went boutique hopping in North Beach and Hayes Valley. Here are some of the awesome finds ...

Love 'dem keds! breaking them in today. a little blistery, but we'll get there.
Eco-friendly mounted deer :) we hung it above the tv. oh the amazing-ness of cardboard :P

One Week is Never Enough

So, I've been pretty busy these past two weeks getting back into the swing of things. Catching up on work and missed tv episodes :) Finally have some time to tell you about my vacation! Basically, I was the best place I've ever been and I had an AMAZING time. We stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel on Maui's west coast. I was not a super swanky place but it had this old school Hawaiian vibe to it that i absolutely adored. I mean if you're in Hawaii, you want to feel like you are! The island is beautiful, even when it's raining and because of the on again off again showers, I counted 7 rainbows during our stay! The community there is something I've never experienced. They have like this island comradery and a laid back-ness that is contagious. We talked to a lot of people who were just nomads. They hop from island to island working side jobs and chillin on the beaches. Tough life. Mind if you join you? :D

Highlights:
Every kind of tropical drink you could imagine, 24/7
Tsunami Saturday - 10 hrs on a hill, waiting for a wave that never came
Driving to the top of the volcano in the freezing bitter cold
Old Lahaina Luau
Snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean with a pink floaty noodle
Driving through a lava field
Driving Kahekili Highway and not dying, but OMG i thought we were going to.
Watching the wake boarders at Kaanapali Beach
Eating some of the best food I've had in ages. Especially the Kahlua pork...mmmmmmmmm
Discovering the most romantic little beaches with my hunny :)
Summary: One week is never enough.

Congrats to the winner of Project Runway Season 6 , Irina Shabeyeva and all the other designers! Irina's collection was really impressive but for me too cold. Sorry Irina, but I'm a color junkie :) I had a much better time watching Carol Hannah's collection. Although the judges said it was missing a connecting thread, I thought it had the most creative and eye catching silhouettes. Posted above are some of her designs.

We went with something much simpler than last year due to time constraints, but recently found out the deadline had been extended! This past weekend I was lucky enough to get a walking tour through the PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society) elephant and tiger sanctuary in San Andreas, CA. The sanctuary is home to 9 asian and african elephants and over 20 tigers, all were resuced from terrible living conditions in either zoos, circuses, or from private owners. The place was breathtaking beautiful and the people there were truly masters of their craft. It was an amazing experience! I could have fed those elephants all day long :) and I don't think they would have minded a bit :) If you would like to donate please go to their website!

I've been meaning to post this for a while now. This is the final piece that Josh and I did for the Purr-Casso event in Berkeley. Josh painted over my original layout (you can see it in a previous post) and then I did some hand details with gold paint. I think it came out pretty nice for our first collaboration. We had a great time at the show too. The submissions were very impressive and we were happy to learn that our piece sold! :))) Thanks to everyone who contributed!!

Yesterday night was the Totoro Forest Project gallery show at Pixar studios. I was lucky enough to get to see and meet alot of amazing artists and finally get to put some faces to some names :) I was also really excited to be accompanied by an artist who had a piece in the show, Clayton Stillwell. (good to see you Clay!) Here are a couple pics I took from outside the building, unfortunately we couldn't take cameras inside otherwise I'd have a LOT more. Josh and I couldn't help but try our luck at the silent auction and won a piece! yay! Its buy the super talented artist Deanna Marsigliese. Her style is amazing and I'm sooo excited to have an original :) A select number of pieces will be over at the Cartoon Art Museum for a while, so if you get the chance to go into the city, you MUST check it out! Heres a rough sketch I did after looking at all the amazing work for the Totoro Forest Project
This fund was established by Hayao Miyazaki and was created to help save the Sayama Forest in Japan, the forest that inspired him to make the movie My Neighbor Totoro. Completely kick-ass artists from all over were asked to create totoro pieces of their own and put them into a gallery show to raise money for the cause. Check out the link for more info :)
